PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — The spring migration is at its peak – and that means increased risk of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, commonly called bird flu. South Dakota reported its first case involving a dairy herd late last week, becoming the eighth state with cases involving dairy cows. State Health Secretary Melissa Magstadt says thankfully, there aren’t any human cases in South Dakota.
The USDA is emphasizing that the milk supply is safe, because pasteurization kills the virus.
